Designed in 1984 for Jane Birkin, the Birkin is a structured handbag closed by a strap flap and padlock, assembled entirely by hand by a single artisan. Its rarity comes from the limited output of the Hermès workshops and from boutique allocation, seldom accessible. Common formats run from 25 to 40, the 30 remaining the most sought-after balance of capacity and line. The leather defines how the piece behaves: grained and supple Togo, rigid and easy-care Epsom, heavier and softer Clémence. Hardware, gold or palladium, also shapes the value.
